Technique 5: Yoga Nidra for Sleep

Lie flat on the bed, face upwards, legs straight and slightly apart, and the arms beside the body with the palms facing upwards.

It is best to lie on a reasonably thin mattress on a firm bed. Try to avoid practising on a 12 inch thick mattress supported by a luxurious spring bed.

Don’t lie on the bed with the specific intention of sleeping. Instead, think to yourself that ‘I will practise yoga nidra just to relax the body and mind.’ If you anticipate sleep then it is less likely to come.

Then begin any of the yoga nidra practices that we have described; that is, techniques 13, but not the executive yoga nidra. If you practise sincerely and with attention it is almost assured that you will be snoozing half way through the rotation of awareness.
