Our origins. Part Two

The Tranquility Training Method was designed for anyone wishing to have a powerful In The Body Experience, through exploring inner space. Certo believes that by simply helping one relax the body and mind, they can explore their inner life. “The hypnogogic state with all of it’s rich imagery is incredibly revealing. It tells us a great deal about how we percieve the events in our physical world”. The approach of TTM is very simple. First, teach the participant to access the hypnogogic state through the appropriate use of binaural beats. Second, allow this access to have the greatest impact by helping ride the edge of this awareness and discover the way their thinking process affects the way the participants worldview. Third, through this new awareness, help the participant realize that they can recreate their current worldview using the power of imagination. In addition to these, TTM gives specific techniques to help teach people how to move into peaceful states of being without the aid of binaural beats. This empowers the individual to learn how to de-stress, focus their attention and direct their awareness in a new and empowering way. “It’s very practical and extremely useful” says Certo. “The important thing to remember is that we really are in control of what happens in our physical life. At the very least, we are in control of how we respond to the events that happen. This can only be done through understanding how we respond and through focusing our intention to choose a different response. Mark Certo is a recording engineer with over 25 years experience. He has extensive training as a broadcaster and has interviewed many noted authors including: Dr.Charles Tart (author of Altered States of Consciousness) Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14 astronaut and author of The Way of the Explorer) Joe McMoneagle (Scientific Remote Viewer) Elizabeth Kubler-Ross(author of On Death and Dying) to name a few. In addition to his 16 years experience using binaural beat stimulus to affect altered states, he has written several articles on the topics of meditation and transformative states of consciousness. He has participated as a consultant in various clinical studies testing the effectiveness of binaural beats to invoke brainwave potential. His spiritual pursuits include meditation techniques from several different disciplines. He is a passionate student of the Kabalah, from both the Lurianic and Western Esoteric traditions. His Kabalistic studies have helped him integrate a more cohesive understanding the unified themes of most religious practices, giving him an unique perspective and respect for all. He is currently undergoing a seven year training in the work of A.H.Almas, and in his second year of training in Integrated Kaballistic Healing as taught by Jason Shulman (founder of The Society of Souls). As I said in my opening statement, so much has been written about binaural beat frequencies and brainwave entrainment that it seems redundant for this information to have been repeated here. Brainwaves and their correlations to states of consciousness have become part of the popular culture. The public’s interest in these correlations has created an entire industry full of various devices designed to entrain brainwaves.

Over the past 16 years of my involvement in the process of researching and creating binaural beats recordings, I have seen many people give their power away to these recordings and devices. The promises made in flashy marketing campaigns create the illusion that binaural beat entrainment is somehow a panacea to all of life’s problems. While there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that binaural beat recordings if masterfully created, do have an uncanny ability to help people move into deep meditative states, I have always been concerned about the oversimplifications and overstatements.

Meditation or exploring altered states is about personal growth, personal realization and personal connection to divinity. To empower anything outside of you is to reject the potential of this growth and realization. You are the magic! Not the device or recording. Meditation, with all of its beneficial results and applications is a practice of devotion and willingness. Through this practice, you are expanding your awareness and opening new channels of communication to previously unexplored parts of yourself. Any thing that helps you achieve this practice is helpful but these things are akin to exercise equipment. Great abdominals and thighs are not achieved through purchasing the equipment; they are achieved through your willingness to do the work. The same applies to mental, emotional and spiritual exercises. Your brain is the mechanism of this self discovery. As such, your willingness to explore its potential and exercise new found levels of awareness in your daily life is the key to this nebulous thing we call “enlightenment”. It is for this reason that meditation and exploring altered states of consciousness has been practiced for thousands of years.

The Tranquility Training Method offers tools for self exploration. These tools are based on currently understood scientific principals as well as spiritual ones that have been in existence for thousands of years. The training method is just that…… a training method. Meditation is a practice which deepens on several levels as one continues the practice. The more you move into altered states, the more you are able to sustain your awareness in them. The more you sustain your awareness in altered states, the more you discover in the vast territory that is you. The more you discover in exploring this territory, the more respect you have for yourself and all of life. The more respect you have for life, the more you realize it is an unfolding process. The more respect you have for the process of life, the more tranquil you are in living it.

The Art of Inducing Altered States

For eons, spiritual leaders have used various techniques to invoke various meditative or altered states. In the Yogic traditions, there are many different words used to describe the various levels of consciousness and the paths for attainment of these states. Words like Yoga Nidra, describe a practice designed to help move one into hypnogogia. The list of words used to describe the experiences of altered states is as lengthy as the list of induction methods and vary from tradition to tradition. Binaural beats are just another means of inducing the same effect. Beyond the marriage of the physics of entrainment with the brainwave/consciousness correlates, the proper use of binaural beat stimulus lays in the hands of the artist. The key to the art form still lays in the concept of entrainment or as defined before, the art of creating sympathetic resonance.

The example of the two guitars resonating A strings, is only one example of sympathetic resonance. Human beings resonate to acoustical energy all of the time. A classic example of this is how people universally respond to music. On the physical level, some music is relaxing to the body and actually slows down the heart rates. Some music is energizing and makes us dance or move physically. On the emotional level, certain songs make us cry, laugh or become contemplative. On the spiritual level, music can create a longing or a sense of mystery and wonder. Musicians have long understood that beats, rhythms, chord structures and melodies can have a very powerful effect on the human psyche and have sought to use this power to help people enjoy the more festive aspects of life. This application of musical talent has made musicians popular and necessary to social events throughout the ages.

The power of music or sound to create altered states is still an unusual idea to the western European mindset. In the east, where meditation and altered states have always been part of the culture, music was specifically composed for the purpose of enhancing the meditative experience. In addition, Native American drum rhythms were consistent with idea of entraining the body and mind into an altered state. Crystal bowls, “OM” chants, the drone of a sitar, all create a non-descript, contiguous wall of sound that makes the listener internalize rather than externalize their response. It is for this reason that mystics have used these instruments as meditation aids. The use of sound as a means of entrainment is very powerful on multiple levels of the human psyche. The techniques and methods used by the practitioners, took years of study to achieve just the right rhythm or sound/tone that would affect the audience in the proper way. It is truly and art form that takes years to master.

Binaural beat recordings work in exactly the same way. The right combination of binaural beats is only part of the equation. The proper amplitude of the selected beat frequencies and correcting for the interaction of carrier waves are essential to the process. Selecting the right carriers also plays a role in addition to other contiguous sounds which help the listener move into altered states. The right narration techniques along with the tone of the voice narrating, makes all the difference. Subtle dynamic shifts in the mixing techniques and proper use of stereo imagining have a major effect as well.

The art and technology of Tranquility Training Method is a compendium of my years of involvement in binaural beat research and as a musician/recording engineer and voice talent. It is through my many years of experience that I am able to create what I believe to be the finest recordings in the genre.

How it Works

Binaural beats work through the entrainment of brainwaves. Entrainment is a word used to describe the phenomena of sympathetic resonance or the power of one thing to affect another thing through some form of energy. An example of this can be observed in acoustic (sound) energy. If you take two acoustic guitars and pluck the A string of one and then bring that guitar into close proximity of the other, the other guitar’s A string will vibrate! This is because the frequency of the first guitar’s A string, is similar or sympathetic to the other guitar’s A string. However, it is not only the frequency that creates the phenomena, but also the amplitude (the volume or power) of the frequency. For instance, if you pluck the A string on guitar # 1 very lightly, in order to make the other vibrate, you may actually have to touch the two guitars together. So in the concept of entrainment, both frequency and amplitude play important roles.

The entrainment process can also be applied to brainwaves. As stated previously, brainwave range is between .5hz and 24hz. This is the target region in order to invoke brainwave entrainment. Through observation of cortical stimulation and response, it was noticed that the brain responds quickly to sound. The problem to over come was that this region (24hz at the high end) could not be heard by the average human ear. The high end of the brainwave threshold (24hz) is right at the low end of the human hearing threshold of 20 hz to 20 khz.

Because of another amazing acoustical phenomenon, called phase cancellation, sound can be used to create a beat structure that meets the criteria! When two sounds of an exact frequency, shape and phase collide in space, the cancel each other out! The binaural beat technique makes use of this phenomenon to achieve an exact differential that falls into the target region! The differential is experienced as a beat and is the product of phase cancellation of the primary carrier sine waves. In simple terms, if one sound, (say 200hz) is presented into the left ear and another (say 210 hz) is presented into the right ear, the resulting differential will be 10hz! Mathematically: 210 – 200 = 10. This ten hertz is experience as an oscillation or beating sound, while the drone of the 200/210 hz tones remains consistent. The brain hears both the beat and the drone and a magical thing begins to happen. The brain begins to entrain to the beat frequency while the drone affects the psyche due to lack of change in stimulus! The 10 hz frequency falls nicely into the alpha brainwave range. Remember that alpha brainwaves are indicative of someone in a light meditative state. The drone reinforces the psychological affect of an inward experience or an altered state of consciousness!

Binaural beats are a sort of modern day equivalent to the techniques used by spiritual leaders throughout time to induce altered states. I say equivalent because while the result are the same, the binaural beat process expedites the results and does not require adherence to any particular belief structure. It simply works!

Throughout my career in this fascinating field of research, I have been blessed to work with some of the greatest minds on the subject. As a result, the recordings I have made in the past 16 years have been used in various clinical settings ranging from hospitals and sleep clinics to various psychic research organizations. The use of binaural beats is well documented to induce relaxation, sleep or conversely to help you achieve a more focused level of concentration. Research on brainwaves and the correlated states consciousness have within recent decades had far reaching applications in the western clinical world. However, with all due respect to the science of binaural beat entrainment, invoking altered states still remains an art form.
